Broncos return to the ice; Top 10 Sports Stories

Dec 29, 2018 | 7:00 AM

The Humboldt Broncos triumphantly returning to play the 2018-19 SJHL season, five months after the bus crash that tragically took the lives of 16 members of the team, makes our Top 10 Sports Stories for 2018.

Instead of taking a year off from competing in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League after the April 6 bus crash, the Broncos instead decided to honour and play for those lost.

They returned to the ice on Sept. 12 for their home opener that was broadcasted live on TSN and received national attention.

The Broncos lost that game 2-1 and their next one 4-0 on the road, both against the SJHL defending champion Nipawin Hawks. But the Broncos then won their following six games and quickly jumped up to the division lead.

They’ve either been first or second in the division ever since, finishing their first half of the year with a 21-13-2-1 record.

Michael Clarke, former Raiders draft pick, is the Broncos’ leading scorer 45 points in 36 games, good for sixth in the SJHL scoring race. Brayden Camrud, who was on the bus when it crashed, has 33 points in 31 games played.

Here are links to their first game and Washington Capitals forward Chandler Stephenson bringing the Stanley Cup to Humboldt.
