The Correctional Service of Canada has confirmed that an inmate who escaped from the Saskatchewan Penitentiary New Year’s Eve turned himself in over the weekend at a correctional facility in southern Alberta.

Steven Briggs, 24, turned himself in to staff members at Bowden Institution. The CSC said Briggs turned himself in around 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

Briggs escaped from the minimum security unit at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary on Dec. 31. Briggs stole a truck belonging to Corrections to make his escape, and was spotted driving the vehicle the next day in Yorkton.

Briggs was serving a jail sentence of seven years and three months for assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, robbery, vehicle theft and possession of property obtained by crime at the time of his escape.
