North Stars fall 6-0 to Klippers

Jan 22, 2019 | 11:19 PM

The Battlefords North Stars fell 6-0 to the Kindersley Klippers Tuesday night at the North Battleford Civic Centre.

With the win, Kindersley leapfrogs the North Stars into the top spot in the Global Ag. Risk Solutions Division.

Klippers’ leading scorer, Kyle Bosch broke the scoreless deadlock just over six minutes into the first period, scoring a single second into Kindersley’s opening man advantage of the game.

Firing a shot off the offensive zone faceoff directly as a result of the Battlefords’ penalty, Bosch shot the puck milliseconds after the frozen rubber left the official’s hand and hit the ice. In a blink, it was 1-0 for the visitors.

The first period ended 1-0, despite the North Stars holding a 17-8 shot advantage.

In the second, Kindersley accrued two more goals, the first from captain Cameron Shorrock and the second from Noah Bankowski.

After Shorrock’s goal came off a scramble in front, Bankowski’s was a bit more of the highlight variety, with the forward the lucky recipient of a fortuitous bounce. The puck caromed off Nate Keeley’s skate on a North Stars attempted outlet pass and sent Bankowski in alone on the Stars’ netminder. Faking forehand, the Saskatoon product promptly pulled the puck to the backhand to slide it home, making it 3-0 Klippers.

In the third, things came completely unravelled with the Stars’ rivals scoring three more goals, courtesy of Ty Enns, Austin Nault and Will Van der Sloot.

Enns’ was an empty net goal, as the North Stars had pulled their goalie with still 10 minutes remaining, hoping to chip away at the deficit while five-on-four, rather that six-on-five later in the frame.

Stars’ goaltender Joel Grzybowski made 20 saves on the 25 shots he faced, while Kindersley’s Justen Close stopped 36 for the shutout, his third of the season.

The North Stars will now look to bounce back quickly, as the team is back in action this weekend in Flin Flon to take on the Bombers Friday and Saturday. You can catch the game on 1050 CJNB beginning at 7:15 p.m.
