Sask. cannabis sales lagging behind other provinces: StatsCan

Jan 24, 2019 | 2:00 PM

Though sales in Saskatchewan nearly doubled in November, per capita, residents of legal age are not purchasing the same amount of cannabis as fellow users across the country.

According to the latest retail trade data from Statistics Canada, retailers sold $926,000 worth of product in the province in November, up from $580,000 in October. This means the average Saskatchewanian is spending just $1.70 on cannabis, using 2017 population estimates from the national statistics agency for those aged 19 and over.

This puts the prairie province near the bottom of the pack, as the Maritime provinces wholly embrace the end to prohibition.

Prince Edward Islanders are burning the most bud per capita, spending on average $17.39. StatsCan reported the maritime province purchased $2.1 million worth of legal goods in the same time frame.

Next in line is Nova Scotia with an average of $13.85, with sales in the Atlantic province at $10.8 million as of Dec. 1. In Newfoundland and Labrador, retailers moved $4.3 million worth of legal cannabis, averaging to $9.99 per person. New Brunswickers purchased an average of $846 worth of product, with sales totalling $5.2 million.

Alberta rounded out the top five at $5.79, with budtenders selling $19.4 million worth of product to those 18 and over. Quebecers spent around $3.10 on cannabis per capita, with sales of $21.2 million in the first six weeks of legalization.

Residents of Ontario are spending around $1.93 each, moving $21.8 million worth of cannabis across the province. British Columbians are spending the least on cannabis each at just 84 cents, however, very few stores have opened their doors on the other side of the Rockies. Both provinces were reported a drop in sales figures in November.

Data for cannabis store sales were not released for Manitoba, Yukon, Nunavut or the Northwest Territories from Statistics Canada.
