New NDP candidates enter northwest provincial race

Jan 28, 2016 | 9:22 AM

The Battlefords and Cut Knife-Turtleford ridings officially have NDP candidates for the upcoming provincial election.

In the Battlefords riding, local lawyer Rob Feist is throwing his hat into the ring and is running for office.

Feist grew up in the rural municipality of Buffalo, attending elementary and high school in Wilkie. In post-secondary, he completed degrees in sociology and law at the University of Saskatchewan and has been practicing law in North Battleford since 2012.

In addition to his law career, Feist has an extensive history with the Royal Canadian Army Cadets. He is a member of the North Battleford Legion No. 70, the No. 38 Army Navy and Air Force Veterans, and the Ionic Lodge No. 31 in North Battleford.

He has been a part of the Battlefords NDP in previous elections and worked with the campaign during the past Federal election.

A major campaign issue for him going forward will be the economy.

“I think that is important to build a strong Saskatchewan economy and really look at what we’re doing as far as deficit choices that we are making,” he said.

Feist said he comes across people who are struggling with money through his work as a lawyer.

“I certainly think that we need a change that puts more priorities on Saskatchewan families and puts more resources where they matter, right here, in Saskatchewan, instead of pumping things away to foreign corporations,” he said.

For Cut Knife-Turtleford, former journalist Danica Lorer is representing the NDP.

Lorer previously worked at a few local newspapers and currently hosts writing and storytelling workshops across the province.

She has worked in the arts over the past 15 years, including serving on the board of directors for the Saskatchewan Writers Guild, a radio broadcast volunteer for Storytellers of Canada-Conteurs du Canada and also was the children’s library facilitator at the Maidstone Public Library.

Lorer says her work listening to the public as a journalist and through her workshops is helping shape her campaign.

“Everybody has a story to tell and I think that we will really need to listen and we need to move forward cooperatively,” she explained, “We have so much in this province that we have the capacity to be the greatest province in Canada. I think it’s the greatest place in the world to live and we can make it better.”

“Right now it’s a little hard, there’s some places that there are people that are hurting and we have problems,” she continued, “But we have the resources, we have the people, we have the ideas, we have the intelligence here to make things better.”

Saskatchewan NDP leader Cam Broten was in attendance Tuesday, Jan. 26, for the nomination and says he is happy with the slate of candidates they have nominated so far.

“I’m so pleased with Rob and Danica, our candidates for the Battlefords and Cut Knife-Turtleford. They’re two strong individuals who love this region and will be fantastic voices for the people of these constituencies,” he said.

Broten adds the party still needs to fill a couple of ridings in the short term, but he is pleased with the current outlook on NDP candidates.
