Stephenson to bring Stanley Cup to Humboldt

Aug 23, 2018 | 11:59 AM

As he promised after winning the Stanley Cup, Washington Capitals forward Chandler Stephenson will bring the silver mug to Humboldt on Friday to highlight Humboldt Hockey Day.

As the Caps were still on the ice celebrating their cup clinching victory on June 7, Stephenson said in a live interview on Hockey Night in Canada that it was important for him to head to Humboldt to celebrate with the community.

“I knew a couple of the guys on the bus,” Stephenson said. “It’s one of those things that I want to do for those guys and the people of Humboldt.”

The cup will be on display from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Elgar Peterson Arena.

Stephenson, who’s from Saskatoon himself, will bring some other Sask-born NHL players along with him in Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon), Scott Hartnell (Regina) and Wade Redden (Lloydminster). Former New York Ranger great Adam Graves will be there too to make up the cast of 15 current or former NHL players.

Along with Stephenson and Lord Stanley’s mug, there will be other things to check out, like the Hockey Hall of Fame and Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame displays and road hockey games against NHL’ers. The Broncos will also sell Humboldt Strong merchandise, with the proceeds supporting the Humboldt Strong Community Foundation.

The actual ‘hockey part’ of Humboldt Hockey Day will begin in the early afternoon. Broncos head coach and general manager Nathan Oystrick will field questions from media in a press conference at 2 p.m. at the Elgar Petersen Arena. Practices begin at 5 p.m., 6:15 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Four scrimmages will be held on Saturday and two more on Sunday, before the Green and Gold Game on Sunday at 5 p.m.
