Part-time firefighters supporting community with sandbag fundraiser

Jan 2, 2019 | 10:39 AM

The North Battleford Part-Time Firefighters Association members are selling sandbags for a new fundraiser to support a local non-profit or charity.

President Jonathon Kadler hopes the campaign brings more attention to the association.

Kadler said the association wants to get “more involved in the community,” and will decide what organization or charity the fundraiser will help in the near future. He personal goal is to raise $1,000 or $2,000.

The association has received support from a number of local businesses and organizations. Much of the product for the sandbags was also donated. About 1,000 sandbags were donated by Battlefords Trade and Education Centre Inc. (BTEC) in exchange for a donation.

Ronda Johnson, office manager for BTEC, said it used to sell sandbags but no longer does as the clientele isn’t able to take on the work.

“We were happy they were going to take it over,” she said.

There are currently 13 part-time and 16 full-time members in the fire department. Part-time firefighters are essentially paid on-call positions. Members attend the fire department six hours per week, are on call 24 hours a day and must attend training sessions.

Kadler said if the campaign is a success they may consider continuing it next year.

He said the sandbags can be used as extra weight for people’s vehicles to provide more traction on the roads over the winter. They can also be used to prevent flooding in the spring.

The sandbags cost $5 each and are available at K and K Glass.
