A 23-year-old man from the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation has been charged with impaired driving after a head-on collision with an ambulance.

Police said on Jan. 1, they were called to the collision on the Debden grid road, approximately six kilometres north of Highway 790 around 3:15 p.m.. The ambulance, which belongs to the Big River EMS, was travelling south en route to another call on the Cree Nation when it was struck.

Both paramedics were not injured. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were taken to a nearby hospital with non-serious injuries. Both have since been released. The driver showed signs of being impaired at the scene and, when released from hospital, was taken into police custody.
