Scheidegger shines, Howard and Gushue qualify in late Friday draw

Casey Scheidegger’s rink has qualified for the quarterfinals at the 2019 Meridian Canadian Open after a 6-4 seven end win over Winnipeg’s Tracey Fleury.

The 2017 champion found herself in action Friday night after a one-point lead heading into the eighth end during the 11:30 a.m. draw was erased when Nina Roth scored two to secure the win. 

It put the Lethbridge-based rink in a need-to-win situation, the same place they found themselves the last time they were here.

“We are just trying to play consistent and we are really excited to be able to qualify,” she said, adding it was a major goal of their’s coming in. “We have our provincials in a couple weeks so the extra games are definitely a benefit.”

Scheidegger said the team made a few errors in their matchup against Roth but learned from them.

“We are just trying to play consistent,” she said. “That is something we haven’t reached yet this year, just being consistent and being able to compete with the best teams.”

Elsewhere on the night, Jennifer Jones was knocked out of the championship at the hands of Silvana Tirinzoni in a 6-0 six end game. 

Tirinzoni found herself battling Jones for a weekend bout after Robyn Silvernagle’s rink cruised to a comfortable 8-4 win in six ends Friday afternoon. Jones landed a spot in late night play after her rink capitalized in a must-win situation during the 3 p.m. draw against Kerri Einarson.

Chelsea Carey punched her ticket to the weekend in a 6-2 win over Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa. Carey clawed her way into Friday night action following a 7-5 win over Darcy Roberston’s rink earlier in the day.

On the men’s side, Glenn Howard advanced to the quarters after besting Brad Jacobs 5-3. Jacobs will now face Matt Dunstone’s rink Saturday morning in a bid to play in the afternoon quarterfinals. Dunstone’s Regina-based rink took a quick 10-2 win in five ends over Jason Gunnlaugson earlier Friday.

Brad Gushue moves onto the quarters after a back and forth affair that ended 4-2 against Peter De Cruz.

Earlier in the day, Calgary’s Kevin Koe secured Saturday spot after making short work of Niklas Edin’s rink 7-2 in five ends, aided heavily by marking a five on the scoreboard in the fifth end. 

John Epping salvaged more time at the championship and sent home Reid Carruthers’ rink after picking up a narrow 4-3 victory.
