Dunstone falls to Jacobs; Edin, Epping qualify

It was a tough end to a strong week by Regina-based rink Matt Dunstone.

After a big win 10-2 win in just five ends yesterday, Dunstone couldn’t get the same thing going early Saturday morning, falling 8-2 in seven ends to Ontario’s Brad Jacobs. The rink went 2-3 over the week, but with their backs against the wall, Dunstone said it just wasn’t their day on the ice.

“Not a fun game to be a part of, simple as that,” he said. “I had two mismatched rocks, the ice was a little different today and just didn’t pick up on that.”

The team has had a busy schedule thus far in the curling season and hasn’t hit the ice to practice as much as they want, the Winnipeg-born skip says.

“We’re close, it sucks,” he said. “We lost to some teams we want to be beating. We do believe we can, and should be beating. Its frustrating for us, a couple times we’ve had a qualify slip away for us. Were close, that’s all we can take away.”

Moving forward, the team will head to Sweden in two weeks for a tournament that the foursome is looking forward to. Dunstone said a good, solid two weeks of practising should help the team.

“I think for us it’s getting a little of a break, it’s been an insane season,” he said. “We haven’t had a chance to practice too much.”

Jacobs moves onto the playoffs this afternoon, as does Niklas Edin, who handed a loss and ended the week of Braden Calvert 7-5, and John Epping, who outmatched Peter De Cruz in seven ends 5-3.

At 11:30 a.m., all eyes will be on the hometown rink of Robyn Silvernagle, as they take on Silvana Tirinzoni, who she beat 8-4 in six ends Friday to clinch the quarterfinal spot.

Elsewhere in the first round of playoffs, the 2017 Meridian Canadian Open champion Casey Scheidegger will look to rout Rachel Homan, Laura Walker is taking on American Nina Roth and Scottland’s Eve Muirhead is up against Chelsea Carey.
