Homan upsets Tirinzoni at Meridian Canadian Open for 10th Slam title

Rachel Homan’s rink executed when needed en route to a 4-3 win over Silvana Tirinzoni at the Meridian Canadian Open, her 10th Grand Slam of Curling title.

The Ottawa-based rink was shaky in the first end, dropping a single, but rebounded emphatically and skirted around Tirinzoni’s defensive plays to steal in later ends, including a stellar split to clear and hold the button in the sixth.

“They were big shots in the hack and I knew there was no room for error,” she said. “They had control there for a little bit and we gave away hammer and we needed to make some big shots so we stepped up as a team and made them.”

On her record-breaking win, Homan said it was amazing, give them teams ability to regroup and put in the work to prepare for the weekend on the back of the Christmas break.

But Tirinzoni was not going down without a fight. A flawless hammer in the seventh end stole two for the Swiss rink.

As a team, Homan said they are proud to have gotten to the point they are today, navigating highs and lows, being honest with their mistakes but continuing to push forward as a team and continue to get better.

“This week shows we are able to bounce back and win three in a row is not something we expected,” she said.

Tirinzoni is likely living through some déjà vu, after dropping an exhilarating showdown in North Battleford in 2017 to Casey Scheidegger’s Lethbridge rink.

Homan made it to Sunday play by way of 6-4 seven end win over Nina Roth Saturday, that saw the rink come out strong early on and hold the lead throughout.
