Team Silvernagle perfect on first day of curling provincials

Jan 23, 2019 | 12:22 PM

Robyn Silvernagle has the Battlefords’ support from across the province as her team competes in the 2019 Scotties Viterra Women’s Provincial Championships in Humboldt.

Team Silvernagle went 2-0 on their first day of round robin play, defeating Team Mitchell in the first draw 10-1 after seven ends and Team Anderson 9-7 in the second draw after nine.

It was the match-up against Team Mitchell which seemed to set the path for Team Silvernagle for the rest of day one.

The rink took a 6-0 lead by the mid-end break, but the message they told themselves during the break was not to sit on the lead.

“Definitely don’t get too comfortable,” Silvernagle said. “It’s a long game and we still had five ends to play after that, so you need to stay defensive and don’t let them crawl back in. We had to stay sharp, stick with our systems, and do what we’ve been doing.”

The system Silvernagle mentioned was more of a defensive strategy, which involved her team knocking out rocks from Team Mitchell and take the easy shots when they came.

Judging solely on the first day, one would find it hard to believe Team Silvernagle had some edges to their game needing to be smoothed out over the course of the season.

“We had a good season but started off a little shaky because we’re a new team,” Silvernagle said. “We’re definitely figuring things out, getting to know each other, how to gel, and how to communicate.”

After day one of the 2019 Scotties Viterra Women’s Provincial Championships in Humboldt, the standings are:

  1. Team Just 2-0
  2. Team Silvernagle 2-0
  3. Team Barker 1-0
  4. Team Anderson 1-1
  5. Team Holland 1-1
  6. Team Streifel 1-1
  7. Team Howard 0-1
  8. Team Eberle 0-2
  9. Team Mitchell 0-2
