Eskimos Give Riders a Big FU to End Preseason with a Bang

June 20, 2016 - 9:05pm

It was probably a good idea that the Riders game against Edmonton on Saturday was not televised.

Listening to how Edmonton swept down the field on their first possession and punctuated it with a touchdown pass to Chris Getzlaf, formerly of the Riders, you can just feel Edmonton GM Ed Hervey telling Eskimo head coach Jason Maas – kick them, kick them hard.

In fact, after the game an Eskimo staffer agreed with Rod Pedersen, voice of the Riders, the Eskimos performance in the game was a big FU to Chris Jones, thus giving me my headline.

Riders Wrap Camp - Go to Edmonton for Final Exhibition Game

June 17, 2016 - 10:53am

So the 2016 Saskatchewan Roughrider training camp has struck their tents and headed off to Edmonton for a Saturday game against the team that Rider GM and Head Coach Chris Jones led to a Grey Cup last year.

It was a week of questions like where is Justin Capicciotti and Jeff Lynch on defense? What about the quarterbacks and who might step in if Darian Durant gets injured? Who is switching position today?

Dial back those expectations of Grey Cup tickets

June 6, 2016 - 1:04pm

Even allowing for poetic licence, Rider GM and Head Coach Chris Jones stating he wanted to throw up after the teams intra-squad game on Saturday was probably an accurate account of where the team is one week into training camp.

As the team lurches towards its June 11 exhibition game bout against the BC Lions, what Jones saw was a sloppiness on the offense and defense that should dispel any thoughts of the Riders coming out of the gate and winning six or eight in a row.
I won’t even mention the $4.3 million deficit the Riders suffered last year. Well, at least not yet.

Riders - the Lourdes of Professional Football?

May 25, 2016 - 11:02am

Riders becoming the Lourdes of Professional Football: Give us your injured, your rehabbed, your draft picks yearning to go south!

In case no one catches the reference, Lourdes is a grotto in France that apparently is the scene of many miracles of people being physically healed.

So, as we await the opening of the 2016 Rider training camp and people are wondering if the Riders are actually holding a rookie camp, a secret that is more tightly held than the number of North Korean nuclear missiles, it may be time to review a few things before more people retire.

Something is rotten in the signing of Clarence Denmark!

Sometimes I get distracted when thinking about this column when Zoey the Magnificent Himalayan shows up at my side to lick the cheddar off my fingers from the cheddar flavored popcorn.

So when that happened last Friday when the Riders did another cut down of players, it seemed easier to let her lick my fingers on one hand as I scouted the Rider roster with the other.

Post Draft Hangover

Post Draft Hangover-Get Ready for Pickle City Thursday

Maybe Beyonce thinks that if you have nothing but Jay Z and a bunch of lemons, you make Lemonade, but here in Pickle City, you try to make the most out of a draft where the former GM left you nothing but cucumbers and the current GM traded draft picks for two guys who promptly retired.

Getting Through the CFL Draft

May 9, 2016 - 1:50pm

Riders will trade first overall pick to Bombers for other picks later on – maybe

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to get through this thing called the CFL draft.

And after an off season unlike any other in Rider history, I suspect the CFL draft will take an interesting turn tomorrow.

The Riders should trade their #1 pick tomorrow and the likeliest suspect is probably the unlikeliest from my point of view and the point of view of any right thinking Rider fan.

Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Lose

May 3, 2016 - 12:59pm

ometimes you have to wonder if the new look Saskatchewan Roughriders (new uniforms coming out May 12) are maybe missing a dot or forgetting to cross a t, here and there.

The last time I reported to you, Maurice Price had announced his retirement, only after walking away with his signing bonus following a trade with Ottawa. So not only are the Riders out some cash, but they also lost a draft pick.
